About the Artist :

What role does art play in your personal well-being?

“Art plays a vital role in my personal well-being. It gives me a sense of freedom that I often did not have in my personal life, and it allows me to process painful experiences, heal, and transform those moments into something meaningful. Through art, I can express myself, feel seen, and make sense of the world around me. As a conceptual artist and activist, I use many art forms to explore my life experiences and the issues I care deeply about. Before my incarceration, I was a graffiti writer and worked in the film industry, and even then art was my outlet. During and after my incarceration, art became even more essential to my well-being. Witnessing the harmful effects of the prison system firsthand changed both me and my work. My art evolved from drawing animals and letters into a practice rooted in storytelling, healing, and educating others about the many pipelines that lead people to prison.”

Does your art have any connection to your personality?

“Like me, my art has a lot of energy and doesn’t always follow a straight path. It often moves in many different directions, combining different ideas, materials, and art forms. That reflects how my mind works and how I experience the world. My curiosity, passion, and lived experiences all shape my creative process, making my art an extension of who I am and what I stand for.”

Lack of Color

$200.00

Spray paint and markers on Wood. This piece shows how CDCR and incarceration remove the color of life from individuals. Many times, when an individual is released, they are shocked at how much color there is in the world. Inside prisons and jails, most of the time people see nothing but sterile grey walls.
