What role does art play in your personal well-being?

“When I am in my creative mode, drawing a new piece is like I’m not imprisoned. I sink into my thoughts as they guide my pen on paper. This skil is what got me through my time in a single cell on San Quentin’s Death Row. There were no distractions just my thoughts and the pen on a page. I learned that a piece that was maybe 20 inched x 28in could award me 600 hours solace and art meditation. Art has become my therapy to work out stressful problems that come with being a condemned man. Now that I’m no longer on death row, my art has evolved to show a brighter and lighter side my psyche. -R. Cash-“

Does your art have any connection to your personality?

“I choose individuals and images that help to overcome fears and bring people together. I feel that enjoying images, songs, and poems can help people to recognize the similarities we all have in place of constantly focusing on our differences. I have grown to dislike prison walls and walls between us all as fellow human beings. Communication is a wonderful thing, and I try to draw images that spark conversations that inspire us all. -R.
